Drillbits and Karma: Alex Chandon’s CRADLE OF FEAR on Blu-ray from Unearthed Films

A disturbingly savage SOV production, Alex Chandon’s Cradle of Fear (2001) is an insanely violent horror anthology now available as a double-disc Blu-ray special edition from Unearthed. Featuring scream queens Emily “Bouff” Bouffante and Eileen Daly, along with Cradle of Filth founder Dani Filth, Cradle of Fear does not attempt to be anything other than the widely over-the-top gore film it is, with some strong sexual content thrown in for good measure. This is pure exploitation on a micro-budget, and as such, it works more than not.

Cradle of Fear suffers from the fate that awaits most anthologies, in the inevitable imbalance that occurs between the individual segments. Cradle of Fear’s clear highlight for me was the early in the film chapter with Bouffante. This is sexy and stylish stuff in the vein of some of Franco’s more transgressive films from the previous decades. I wish the whole film had this kind of stylish sexual energy, much of which is due to Bouffante’s uninhibited nature that recalls Lina Romay.

At two hours, Cradle of Fear’s is one chapter too long. Stylistically, this is a pretty superior SOV, although I wish DP Sebastiano Bontempi could have carried the more cinematic look of the Bouffante portion through the whole film. Sadly, the quality wildly varies. The film’s big-selling point, and certainly the one I recall from UK horror mags of the period, is its pulverizing effects. The hands-on stuff here is still shockingly well-done, although the less said about the stabs at early 2000s digital the better.

This new Unearthed collection includes archival interviews and behind-the-scenes featurettes. The BIG selling point to the set is the bonus-disc that collects that majority of Chandon’s fun, inventive and gory SOV shorts. These run from just a few minutes all the way up to near 45 minutes in a few cases. Various other promotional goodies are sprinkled on this disc as well, but it is these marvelously over-the-top mini-films that remain perhaps the best part of the entire package. Had Chandon’s cult-favorite Pervirella (1997) been included, this Unearthed special edition would have collected near the entiriety of Chandon’s filmography. A wonderfully unhinged trailer for Pervirella is thankfully included.

Cradle of Fear remains an incredibly visceral film due to its level of violence. The kills here hurt, and the old-school gore content is unsettling and very well-done. For that reason alone, this is an easy recommendation for fans of extreme horror. Micro-budget SOV admirers will also find much of value. Cradle of Fear’s punk/anarchic spirit and relative ugly spirit will turn off certain viewers, but I reckon that’s kind of the point.

Cradle of Fear can be ordered directly from Unearthed or MVD.
