A weirded-out, frantic freak-fest of ridiculous proportions, Vampire Time Travelers (1998) is the goofyx2 debut feature from fast-talking Les Sekely. Recently released as a massively pimped-out edition from Visual Vengeance, complete with a bonus film and hours of extras, Vampire Time Travelers plays out like a gas-station crack trip.
Sekely was part of the one in a million club back in the nineties, batting around Hollywood trying to break through. He never did, but he got to make Vampire Time Travelers, and that’s more than most lost dreamers get to do. His debut is damn near a one-man show with him scripting, editing, acting, of course, directing, and even composing the uber-bizarre score.
Running just over an hour, Vampire Time Travelers isn’t an especially well-done SOV production, but I like the way Sekely makes this a clearly personal vision. This is very much the work of an artist doing his own thing, and I dig that, even if I don’t always dig the results. The same thought goes for I Know What You Did In English Class, his second feature, also included on this Blu-ray.
Vampire Time Travelers is blessed with a very enthusiastic, nearly all-female cast that makes the film worth watching. Sekely has written a monumentally silly script here, complete with cringeworthy dad-jokes, but his cast handles all with gusto.
Vampire Time Travelers is certainly not amongst the finest examples of nineties SOV cinema, but this is still an adventurous, experimental film. Visual Vengeance packs the film with extras on its new Blu-ray edition, including a director’s commentary, an interview, additional cast and crew interviews, plus Sekely’s additional film work (including his 2nd and final film, I know What You Did In English Class). Visual Vengeance has put together a fantastic package (complete with poster and slipcover) for a film that is only fitfully successful. Still, it is always great to see another one of these little SOV oddities come back into the light. Order now from MVD.
