Dreamscape Media is gearing up to release the award-winning 2019 coming-of-age drama, For Now on DVD. Directed by the man and woman behind Sissy (2022), For Now is a modern-day road picture and an Austrailan/English co-production shot on location throughout California.

Covering a couple of days in the lives of twenty-something-year-old friends on their way to an important audition, For Now is a mumblecore-ish production written, directed, and starring Australian film figures Kane Senes and Hannah Barlow. There’s not a lot on the line in the 80-minute For Now, but as a minor character study it is fine and well-acted.

Kane Senes kicked off his directorial career a bit over a decade ago with the action family drama Echoes of War (2015). He began working with actress Hannah Barlow in the years that followed, after she made her acting debut with the 2017 short The Armoire. For Now is the first film from the team that eventually resulted in Sissy.

For Now is indeed controlled by Senes and Barlow. Senes even edits the film, with the cinematography by Kyle Stryker and Anton du Preez perhaps being the only major aspect of the film not dominated by the Australian team. Because of their heavy involvement, For Now must have been a passion project for the duo, but the reasoning is never fully onscreen.

Despite the lack of urgency or immediacy, For Now isn’t a bad little modern road movie. Senes and Barlow are both more than competent behind the scenes and in front of the camera, and they do well with their obvious low budget. For Now isn’t especially memorable, but as a minor little wandering character study it is more than adequate.

Dreamscape doesn’t offer up anything in the way of extras on this DVD release of For Now. That’s a shame, as I’m curious what led Barlow and Senes to the production and how it related to their own lives. For Now is, well, not bad, and this Dreamscape DVD is an affordable no-thrills way to see it. It is available on sale at MVD.
