Altered Innocence continues its impressive line of fine international cinema releases with the new Blu-ray for Diego Céspedes’ The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo (2025). Winner of the Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes 2025 and Chile’s official Oscar entry, Céspedes’ debut feature is a moving work centered on acceptance and family, deserving its acclaim.
A striking allegory on the early AIDS epidemic, The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo is set in a small Chilean village in the early eighties. When a mysterious virus begins making locals ill, a queer household of trans women and drag performers is targeted out of fear, hatred, and repressed desire. Written by Céspedes, The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo is an incredibly emotional debut that’s quite unique in its delivery.
The large ensemble cast that packs The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo is led by young Tamara Cortés as Lidia and Matías Catalán as her adopted mom Flamenco. Both give extremely moving performances, as does the cast as a whole. There’s not a performance in the film that rings false in this expertly played drama.
Born in Santiago in early 1995, Céspedes makes a major splash here, and it is easy to see why this is a festival favorite. He’s blessed to be working alongside cinematographer Angello Faccini for this ambitious debut, beautifully photographed and shot on film in a 4.3 ratio. The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo is a gorgeous film to look at, yearningly nostalgic and strangely surreal.
Céspedes ambition overtakes his abilities at times, specifically with his original script that’s just a little too dense for its own good. Running a bit long at nearly 110 minutes, the film’s first half is absolutely its most effective. It runs out of steam during parts of its conclusion, but regardless, this is still a marvelous introduction to a major new talent.
Altered Innocence doesn’t feature any bonus features for this new Blu-ray, save for a trailer, but the utilized print looks sparkling and sounds vibrant. In its original Chilean language with English subtitles, The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo is a lovely and powerful film, haunting and heartbreaking.
Highly recommended.
